The UK must turn away from the EU’s over-reliance on the precautionary principle and adopt a pro-innovation approach to make a success of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). As the world witnesses an unprecedented fusion of new technologies, a new Free Enterprise Group paper released today makes the case for embracing the 4IR. The result would be substantial supply-side benefits, including increased productivity, lower prices for goods and services, and greater consumer choice. Author Alan Mak MP calls for Britain to seize the opportunity Brexit presents to strategically pivot away from a risk-averse culture that has stifled science and innovation to a new, more entrepreneurial approach. Charting twenty clear priorities for the Government, he makes the case for the establishment of the most pro-innovation regulatory framework in the world. Recognising the seismic impact that the 4IR will have on society, the report also underlines the importance of maintaining and bolstering our education system to ensure that no-one is left behind. Support for lifelong learning forms a key element of the policy proposals, so that people have the skills needed to take up 4IR jobs.
