Cameron must reconnect with Britain’s striving class – and raising the 40% tax threshold is the way to do it

Chairman of the Free Enterprise Group Kwasi Kwarteng writes an article for the Mail on Sunday calling the importance of focusing on how Government taxes the middle class as they are key to general growth and victory in the 2015 general elections. Kwarteng highlights the need for Government to understand the ‘striving class’ as it did in the 80s for this is the class that ‘understands what has made Britain succesful in the past: hard work, free enterprise, and a sense of ambition.’ He mentions a paper published by the Free Enterprise Group arguing for increasing tax threshold in line with wages and moving income and corporation tax to a single rate of 20% and setting short term measures as well for people under 25 to be exempted from paying national insurance. The chairman of the Group believes this is how the party will be electorally rewarded, reconnect with ‘strivers’ and show deliverance to those who work for it.
